Introduction

An introduction kind of thing:

Greetings, my name is Alexis O. Méndez. I’m graduate student from the University of Puerto Rico in Arecibo, where after five years of excellent education, I acquired a Technical Bachelor’s Degree in Television and Radio Communications with an emphasis in Digital Cinematography. My creative passion is filmmaking, and if something interesting or shocking happens around me, I will feel the urge to write about it. Luckily for me, well, kind of, there’s been a lot of things happening here in my beautiful yet mismanaged island of enchantment.

Filmmaking is the air I need to survive. I love making and watching movies — learning all sort of techniques from every single one of them, but I started learning filmmaking through the internet and by making ridiculous films with my cousin way before starting college. Once I became a student, I produced several short films, directed two radio programs, and made my supervised practicum as a production assistant in a Puerto Rican film directed by Bruno Irizarry. I’ve also participated in various film festivals — winning audience awards for two films I wrote and directed, and being officially selected in festivals throughout New York, México and Puerto Rico with a short film written by my wonderful wife.

Nowadays, years after my college graduation, the devastating hurricane María, my mother’s diagnosis of Alzheimer’s, and the historical protests against a corrupted government, I’m still a filmmaker, only now I’m trying to make a statement about the problems Puerto Rico and myself are facing. As time goes by, I would love to see myself highlighting a professional career as a writer and director working in feature films, television series and/or streaming platforms. But for now, I’ll make sure to acquire as much experience as I can and be ready for any opportunity that comes my way.
